02 Feb 2015: Evince Achieves Key Technical Milestone

Over the past year Evince has been working on a programme to integrate the final key process step that would validate the basis of its revolutionary approach to electronics using synthetic diamond. At the end of 2014 this resulted in the successful production of diodes exhibiting an order of magnitude lower on-state voltage than previous devices. These latest devices fully validate the scientific model for electron emission into diamond developed by the company and pave the way for taking the technology into commercialisation.

Evince’s highly novel approach centres around the use of proprietary surface engineering techniques to modify a synthetic diamond surface so that it is capable of injecting electrons through the material. This approach leads to a number of potential electronic devices capable of benefitting from the far superior physical properties of diamond over any other wide band gap material.

CEO Gareth Taylor said, "It’s been a challenging journey to pull together the resources needed to fully implement our device concept, but it's now clear that the way forward is about process improvement and optimisation rather than science. As we've worked to achieve this important milestone we have come to realise that this fundamental electron source technology has applications beyond the power device technology that has been the focus of the business to date.

"For example, over the past 5 years there has been growing recognition that high frequency (THz) and advanced digital devices need to look once more towards approaches such as vacuum electron techniques. Evince’s enabling technology can deliver this totally within the solid-state and therefore has the potential to open the door to a new generation of devices. As a result we are now looking to broaden our horizons and hope to be making further announcements in the coming months."

The company would like to thank the Innovate UK SMART programme for their support to help make this happen.
